I agree! At least based on my experience and my collaborators at the same company, but I don;t know how dysfunctional that is across the whole industry.

And I think it's a dilemma about how much you trust the intern. I'd bet it's not quite right to assign important projects to the intern who will just be there for a few months, and at the same time, getting them to work on side projects may be demoralizing. I've not been on the mentor side, so curious what you think on this.
